About the Event

Visit this north-of-the-Arctic Circle native community - one of the last primarily subsistence cultures in North America. Camp and hike on the tundra; observe changes wrought by climate change; enjoy "Indian stories" of our host Charlie Swaney, master hunter and fervent defender of the Gwich'in way of life and the caribou on which they depend. Visit with Gwich'in elders and learn of their efforts to protect the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from oil drilling.

The trip begins with an overnight in Fairbanks, followed by a 2-hour plane ride to the village. Do all this in sight of the Brooks Range. The trip is divided half camping, half indoor stays.

Cost: $900 ($800 - students)
